A Canadian banker has been shot dead while on vacation with his girlfriend after getting into an argument over his bar tab at a popular beach resort, police say.

Victor Masson, of Quebec, had spent Sunday all day at the beach with Elva Castillo and remained in their hotel while she dined with her family in the Puerto Escondido on the Pacific coast.

The mortgage advisor decided to go out by himself and wound up at the Michelada El Aldoquin bar where he allegedly argued over an unpaid bill.

He was found dead early Monday morning after he had been shot in the back in the Puerto Escondido neighborhood of Arroyo Seco, two miles from the bar.

José Rodríguez, attorney general for the state of Oaxaca, said: ‘After the fight, he makes some calls stating that he had been robbed and at dawn he turned up dead.

‘The main line (of investigation) of this case is what occurred that night.’

In an interview with news outlet Noticiero Televisa, the banker’s girlfriend Castillo said that Masson had become worried over the the two men and women that he had met at the bar.

He told her: ‘I have no idea what’s going on. If I text you the word “danger,” find my location and call the police, okay?’

Masson would then send her an additional message after the group intercepted him as he tried to leave the bar and return to the hotel.

‘It’s very like … I’m stuck with them,’ he said. ‘I tried to leave and they were like, “No, no, stay,” so it’s weird.’

Castillo said she filed a missing person’s report after he failed to show up at the hotel and then learned of his murder several hours later.

A spokesperson for Masson’s family said he was vacationing for two weeks and visited Castillo’s relatives, and that they were having a difficult time getting information from the police.

They said the alleged killers stole the mortgage advisor’s wallet but left his phone and passport behind. 

According to his LinkedIn profile, Masson worked as a mortgage advisor at Laurentian Bank and had studied at Bishop’s University in Quebec. 

Masson’s death came  days after 23-year-old Argentine national, Benjamín Gammond, died from injuries sustained following a machete attack. 

The 23-year-old, who spent the last two years living and working in the restaurant industry in Mexico, was having a meal with two friends, Santiago Lastra, 22, and his girlfriend, Macarena González, 29, at a beachside restaurant in the town of  Laguna de Chacahua when they were hacked by Cruz Martínez, 21, on May 12.

Gammond suffered three head wounds and was flown to a hospital in Mexico City where he died Monday.

Lastra, who suffered a fractured shoulder, and González, who was treated for a wounded and fractured, were released from a local medical facility and are recovering.
