This is the moment have-a-go heroes fought off a gang of thugs armed with machetes after a robbery at a designer store in Leeds.

The terrifying incident, which took place in broad daylight and in front of stunned members of the public, saw the criminals target the Flannels shop in Vicar Lane, Leeds.

It is believed four or five men went into the store, at least one of which was carrying a machete, The Sun reports.

No one is thought to have been hurt in the incident, even though footage posted on social media shows two members of staff tussling with the masked thugs to stop them stealing items.

In extraordinary scenes two shop workers can be seen fending off the gang as they slash at them with machetes, before fighting with them to ensure they leave without a large bag of goods.

Footage shared on an Instagram page called thestreetblogs5 shows one of the shop workers running away from a black BMW carrying a large white bag.

He is then followed by two men wearing masks, one of whom appears to be carrying a machete and the other holding what looks to be a knife.

Bystanders can be heard shouting ‘Oh my God’ and gasping as the machete-wielding thug begins swiping at the man with the blade.

He then grabs the bag from the man and runs back to the car, but another man runs up and helps the employee grab it back.

The shop workers keep a firm grip on the bag, ensuring that as the car pulls away with the door still open, they can rip it from the assailant’s grasp.

The car then stops for a second as the robbers realise they don’t have the bag, before it is driven away at speed.

West Yorkshire Police has said it is appealing for witnesses to the shocking incident, which took place on Monday July 3, to come forward.

A spokesperson for the force told The Sun: ‘Detectives are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed this robbery and are asking anyone who was in the area to check their dashcam footage to see if they have captured any part of this incident.

‘Anyone with information is asked to contact Leeds District CID by using 101 Live Chat online or by calling 101, quoting 13230368639.’

MailOnline has contacted West Yorkshire Police for further comment.
