Drivers warned of ICE risk on roads: Met Office issues yellow warning on frosty Bank Holiday Monday with lows of 2C… before rain later in the week pushes mercury up to highs of 14C

  • Parts of the UK were hit by rain and snow which froze overnight to make ice
  • It meant motorists were faced with some treacherous conditions on the roads
  • The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for north Scotland

Motorists have been warned to be careful driving on the roads today as the Met Office kept a yellow warning over Scotland.

Freezing temperatures overnight made for some treacherous conditions this morning as families woke up to the big chill.

The problem was caused by rain, sleet and snow which plagued the area for much of the weekend.

In its warning, the Met said: ‘Rain, sleet and snow is expected to ease during Sunday leaving surfaces wet and with a cold night to come this is likely to lead to icy stretches forming widely on untreated surfaces across Scotland.

It comes amid a fresh alert on heavy rainfall facing much of the UK this week.

Experts say that tonight will be cloudy, particularly so in western parts of England, Scotland, and Wales through the evening.

It is going to bring band of rain to Northern Ireland, reaching Wales, western England and Scotland during the early hours of the morning.

It is the same story tomorrow with the rain expected to continue to sweep across the country with snow expected over the Scottish hills.

In the late morning, there will be some dry periods to the east as the rain turns more showery.

The afternoon is going to be even worse with persistent rain predicted to move in through the afternoon and lasting the evening.

Then on Wednesday and Thursday there will finally be some sunny intervals.

These will be punctuated with scattered showers for many, which will be heavy at times in the morning.

These will gradually fizzle out to leave some more bright spells, mainly towards the east.

Thursday will be dry to the east and cloudy, while rain moves into the northern and western parts.
