It’s awards seasons which means only one thing: eagle-eyed fashion fans are watching the events just as keenly as film buffs.
Spotting what the A-listers choose to wear as they parade down the red carpet is just as important as seeing who picked up the gongs for some viewers.
And two actors gaining lots of attention – much of it unwanted – for their ensembles are Florence Pugh and Emily Blunt.
The two thespians opted for a trend which left some fashionistas upset – with one even questioning whether their frocks had fallen victim to the dreaded ‘wardrobe malfunction’.
And the feature in question is ‘floating straps’, a design which saw the stars wearing gowns which had should straps placed several inches above their shoulders rather than resting on top of them.

Meanwhile, Florence Pugh (pictured) also opted for the unconventional style feature in her Del Core frock at the Oscars last night
The big winners on the night were Christopher Nolan, Cillian Murphy, Emma Stone, Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Robert Downey Jr.
Oppenheimer won a whopping seven Oscars at Sunday night’s Academy Awards, while Poor Things, The Holdovers, American Fiction, Anatomy of Fall and The Zone of Interest picked up big prizes
Best supporting actress nominee Emily Blunt may not have won her category, but she did appear on several best dressed lists, thanks to her beaded champagne-colour Schiaparelli gown with floating shoulders.
Stylist Jessica Paster, who helped Emily choose the gown, told Vanity Fair: ‘Did I know that people were going to talk about the shoulder? Absolutely. Do I care what anybody else has to say? Absolutely not.’
Jessica added: ‘At the end of the day, she looked absolutely beautiful. It was such a beautiful dress.’
She also noted she was surprised to see Florence Pugh wearing a similar detail on her silver Del Core dress, as she ‘thought [Blunt] was gonna be the first one to wear [the floating shoulder]’.
However, while the stylist may have thought the detail was beautiful, it was surprisingly contentious among a number of viewers, who shared their negative thoughts on social media.
One Instagrammer said: ‘I thought it was a wardrobe malfunction.’
And one X (formerly Twitter) user wrote: ‘The floating straps have got to go. one of the worst trends in years. I just want to press them all DOWN.’
Another added: ‘why’s emily blunt’s dress straps just floating in the air?’
The majority of online fashion viewers appeared to dislike the ‘floating strap’ trend, however, some were fans of the new look
In a similar vein, a further commentator wrote: ‘What’s going on with Emily’s upper dress straps? Looks like they’re floating.’
Meanwhile, another wrote: ‘Apparently floating straps are in?’
However, a small minority of viewers seemed to be fans of the trend, sharing positive thoughts on the new look.
One wrote: ‘I didn’t know what to think at first…but I dig the floating shoulder straps on Emily Blunt and Flo Pugh.’
And another added: ‘OMG FLOATING STRAPS OF GORGEOUSNESS. Charlize! I live!’

Separately, Emily’s figure-hugging Schiaparelli sequinned couture dress faced a backlash because of the quirky bejewelled Y-front shape on the gown.
Emily’s stylist Jessica Paster took umbrage with fans who said the underwear outline ‘ruined the whole look’ as she shared photos on Instagram.
She replied: ‘because you absolutely have no sophisticated taste’.
When another critiqued: ‘I think this is just too cool of a dress for her and the glam didn’t help’, Jessica hit back: ‘I didn’t see you on the red carpet???’.
The cream coloured gown was covered with sequins and had gravity-defying straps, but as Emily walked the red carpet, all viewers could talk about was the beaded outline of a pair of Y-fronts on her dress and the bizarre shoulders.
One wrote: ‘Is Emily Blunt wearing the—the men’s tightie whities underwear dress? Yeah—she is’ while another said: ‘thank you emily blunt for bringing back the handball keeper jock strap’.
Others said: ‘Why does Emily Blunts dress have y fronts rhinestoned on it?’ and ‘Emily Blunt’s dress has shopping bag handles for shoulder straps’.
‘Emily Blunt wearing that dress makes me miss Joan Rivers and Fashion Police. Joan would’ve had some great jokes.’
‘What is up with Emily Blunt’s dress? Miranda Priestly is scowling.’
Jessica has been a stylist for more than 20 years and had dressed a number of stars including Eva Longoria, Sandra Bullock and Jennifer Aniston for big red carpet events such as the Emmys, Golden Globes and the Met Gala.
Cate Blanchett once raved about her as she said: ‘The great thing about Jessica is [her ability] to inhabit the fashion world and be human and real.’
Emily’s film Oppenheimer won a whopping seven Oscars at Sunday night’s Academy Awards – while rival Barbie only won one.
