A school has sent a letter to worried parents after a female teacher was charged with allegedly grooming a teenage boy and performing an ‘indecent act’.
Chelsea Jane Edwards, 28, from Paradise Point, south-east of Brisbane, was charged with two counts of grooming and one count of indecent treatment of a child under the age of 16 while working at Indooroopilly State School on March 10.
Police allege the school’s sports co-ordinator met the teenage boy through an Indooroopilly educational facility and began grooming him from July of last year when the pair met up socially outside of school.
Executive Principal, Michael Hornby, penned a letter on Tuesday to address the ‘allegations of a serious nature’.
In the letter, Mr Hornby reassured the school’s community that they would be providing support throughout the ordeal.

‘First and foremost, I want to reassure you that we treat the safety and welfare of our children, our students, as our highest priority at all times,’ he wrote.
‘While I appreciate your desire to understand the specifics of this matter, I am sure you would understand that I am unable to go into any details for legal reasons.
‘In that respect I ask you to consider refraining from providing commentary about the issue on social media or other forums.
‘Support services are available for anyone who may require assistance.
‘Thank you for your continuing support of our school.’
The state’s Child Protection and Investigation Unit were made aware of the teacher’s alleged actions in February after a complaint was lodged.
Ms Edwards is due to reappear at the Southport Magistrates Court on May 2.

It is understood she has been on leave since charges were laid on March 10.
Indooroopilly State school has a student body of around 2500, making it one of the largest state schools in Queensland.
A father of two children at the school told the Courier Mail that as of Monday night there had been ‘no communication from the school to the parents’.
‘Bit surprised at that as I’d have thought they’d want to alleviate concerns before the news got out from other sources,’ he said.
He said his children were surprised by the news as the teacher was well-liked by students.
