A new playground for kids that cost $2.55 million to build has come under fire after a four-year-old girl had her face sliced open by a sharp-edge on a slide.

The incident occurred at Anzac Park in Somerset, Tasmania with the girl’s mother, Megan Bellette, taking to social media to detail what happened to her daughter.

Ms Belette said on Monday her daughter was injured at the newly-built playground, warning parents that it was unsafe.

Ms Bellette took to the Somerset community Facebook page saying: ‘My four-year-old daughter, unfortunately, had an awful accident yesterday afternoon at the new Somerset playground, resulting in a very nasty and deep cut requiring three stitches at the emergency department.’

She said she returned on Tuesday to see the slide had not been soldered off smoothly and had ‘a very sharp underside’.

‘Please take care with your kiddies. I will be letting the council know tomorrow so they can fix it ASAP.’

Waratah-Wynyard Council disputed the claim the playground was unsafe saying the equipment was certified as safe by a ‘playground auditor’.

The local council said in light of the social media post, improvements have been made by the ‘contractor responsible’ for constructing the playground.

The social media post gained widespread attention with more than 100 comments, many of which criticised the facilities.

‘Must say for the cost of the park it’s not that crash hot, and it’s open to the public but not even finished yet?’ one man said.

‘Where’s the climbing thing in the middle of the platform for the slides? Barricaded off cause (sic) it hasn’t even been installed yet, and then to see things like this … glad your daughter is okay but that’s outrageous.’

While another wrote: ‘tbh (sic) it should be closed now and investigated and repaired.’

A spokesperson from the Waratah-Wynyard Council told The Mercury that no official report about the incident had been made.

‘The matter was forwarded to the contractor responsible for the playground works yesterday, and improvements have since been made to the relevant equipment,’ the spokesperson said.

‘The playground equipment was inspected prior to the opening of the park and was certified by a playground auditor as being compliant.

‘The Anzac Park playground is a long-awaited and significant asset to the Coast, and while any injury to a child is unfortunate, the playground has been enjoyed by hundreds of families since opening.’

The park only opened in 2023 and cost more than $2.5million to build.

Daily Mail Australia have contacted Waratah-Wynyard Council for comment.
