‘It’s Ewan McGregor not Ewan Gregor!’ Jeopardy fans are furious after professor contestant wins show despite giving ‘wrong answer’

  • Fans of Jeopardy! were concerned after Monday night’s game that the ultimate winner of the show got an answer wrong, for which she was awarded points
  • It sounded as though contestant Melissa Klapper said the name ‘Ewan Gregor’ when she should have said ‘Ewan McGregor’
  • Klapper went on to win Monday night’s game by $1

Jeopardy! fans are up in arms about the potentially unjust win of a woman during Monday night’s episode.

Contestant and professor Melissa Klapper won Monday night’s episode of the beloved trivia show. But following her win, fans and social media users were quick to call out an answer of hers that they believe was wrong.

During the end of the first round, Klapper appeared to call the Scottish actor Ewan McGregor, Ewan Gregor, but was given the points anyways.

Klapper, of Pennsylvania, narrowly defeated Jake Garrett, a teacher and football coach from Alabama, as well as Kelly Barry, a marketing communications specialist from Seattle during the episode.

At one point early in the evening, the final question from a category called ‘Quite the Fishy Story’ was played for $600, and a clue was presented by host Ken Jennings.

‘The force of Lasse Hallström was strong pull in this Scot to play a fisheries expert in ‘Salmon Fishing in the Yemen,” it read.

Poll

Do you think Melissa Klapper gave the correct answer?

Klapper responded with what sounded like: ‘Ewan Gregor.’

The name of the actor in the 2011 film is Ewan McGregor.

Despite the potential incorrect response, Jenning confirmed it was right and closed the category.

‘That is correct, taking you to $5,200, you’re just off the lead,’ he said. At the time, Garrett was leading the three contestants with $6,800.

But fans were quick to employ their rewind buttons to see if they could make out what Klapper really said.

Some flocked to Twitter to question the results and see if others had heard what they did.

‘Tonight there was a mistake on @Jeopardy the woman in the middle named Melissa said ‘Ewan Gregor’ wen really it’s ‘Ewan Mcgregor’ I played it back twice just to make sure,’ wrote one fan.

Another wrote: ‘That red headed lady who won answered a question incorrectly. She said Ewan Gregor instead of Ewan MCREGOR. We ran it back twice. She didn’t say it. She shouldn’t have won.’

‘Melissa missed the question where the answer was Ewan McGregor! She said Ewan Gregor….we replayed it several times. She was awarded points in error…and now she won. Unfair to other players..,’ wrote another.

One fan directly addressed the host in her online response: ‘Hi Ken, on tonight’s Jeopardy, Kelly answered ‘Ewan Gregor’ to the question about Salmon Fishing in the Yemen and was given the points when the answer should have been Ewan McGregor. Were the scores ever corrected?’

Slowed down footage of Klapper’s response would suggest she did actually say the ‘Mc’ part of the actor’s name, but it wasn’t audible.

The judges appeared to agree with that assessment, as they awarded her the points.

Klapper would go on to win the night, unseating Barry as champion, and defeating Garrett by just $1.

Fans were similarly upset when, a few weeks ago, an editing error accidentally revealed the winner of a recent episode.

A cutaway shot of host Mayim Bialik’s monologue revealed the final scores during the opening moments of the show, an error that the show’s executive producer Michael Davies called a ‘horrible error.’

Last year, Jennings angered fans when he let a winner of the show correct his answer to a question, but did not extend the same courtesy to a different competitor.
