Justin Trudeau has broken cover four days after announcing his shock split from his wife, as he and his teenage son Xavier went to see the Barbie movie sporting their best pink outfits.

The Canadian Prime Minister posted the picture on Instagram and Twitter just days after he announced his separation from Xavier’s mom, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau.

The couple were married for over 18 years and share three kids together – their eldest Xavier as well as his younger siblings Ella-Grace, 14, and Hadrien, nine.

The Liberal party leader rarely shares pictures of his kids, with the post offering an insight into his close father-son bond with his eldest.

In the post, Trudeau and his lookalike son are seen beaming in front of a Barbie poster at the cinema, with the Canadian premier donning a neon hoodie for their movie night while Xavier wore a fuchsia t-shirt.

The picture was captioned ‘We’re Team Barbie’, in apparent reference to the ‘Barbenheimer’ trend – with blockbusters Barbie and Oppenheimer releasing on the same day and being pitted against each other at box offices around the world.

Barbie stars Margot Robbie as the famous doll and has just surpassed the $1billion takings mark, making its director, Greta Gerwig, the first solo female director to achieve this.

Prominent themes in the movie include patriarchy and toxic masculinty – something Grégoire has been outspoken about in relation to raising her sons.

She told Narcity in March: ‘I think that if we don’t talk about the toxic masculinity and principles and cultures that our boys are living in, we won’t be able to address the true root causes of the problem that girls and women face in our society.’

Now she and Trudeau have announced their split, the couple has said they will remain a close family and continue to share parental responsibilities.

In a statement released on Wednesday in English and French, Trudeau wrote: ‘Hi everyone, Sophie and I would like to share the fact that after many meaningful and difficult conversations, we have made the decision to separate.

Trudeau’s office also released a statement to confirm they had reached a legal agreement and that the pair will remain amicable, holidaying together soon with their three kids.

Sophie has moved out of the family home to another residence in Ottawa, a spokesman said.

‘They have worked to ensure that all legal and ethical steps with regards to their decision to separate have been taken, and will continue to do so moving forward.
