A teenager is fighting for his life after a disturbing incident outside a New Year’s Eve party in which his eye was pierced by a shard of broken glass.

The boy, 16, was allegedly assaulted by three teenage boys who were earlier refused entry to a house party in Ocean Street, Dudley, south of Newcastle.

The trio allegedly attacked the teen outside the party when he left the premises.

Officers attended the home to find the boy with serious lacerations to his head and face.

Police allege the three teens smashed the glass bottle against the boy’s face, leaving him with serious injuries.

He was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics and taken to John Hunter hospital in a critical condition, where he remains in an induced coma.

Police said the alleged incident occurred when he left the party just after midnight. 

The boy is expected to undergo emergency surgery on New Year’s Day.

Two teenage boys, aged 16 and 17, were arrested nearby and taken to Belmont Police Station. 

A third teenage boy, aged 17, was arrested soon after and taken to the same police station.

All three were charged with reckless grievous bodily harm in company, and reckless wounding in company.

They were refused bail to appear in Children’s Court on New Year’s Day.

‘A crime scene was established, and police have commenced inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident,’ a police statement said. 

A police forensics team and detectives were investigating and interviewing people who attended the party. 

Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information about the alleged assault to contact Lake Macquarie police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
