Two schools have sent some of their students home after Covid outbreaks left them understaffed – with one forcing all pupils to wear face masks.

Liverpool Girls High School, in Sydney’s south-west, announced on Tuesday that Year 9, 10 and 11 students would have to work from home immediately, while all staff and students still in school would have to wear masks.

The school initially announced a five-day mask mandate, before sending some students home when cases increased.

Meanwhile, Orange High School in the central-west of NSW, also announced learning from home will take place for students in Year 7 through to Year 10 this week.

The announcement impacts one grade each day – though year 11 and year 12 students will be exempt from the guideline.

The move comes despite the World Health Organization this month declaring the Covid pandemic was over.

Taking to Facebook on Tuesday, a Liverpool High School spokesperson wrote: ‘Due to increasing COVID cases in the community, Years 7, 8 and 12 will be learning at school and are expected to attend.

‘Years 9, 10 and 11 will be learning from home and are expected to be online at 9.30am.

‘These measures will be in place Wednesday 17 – Friday 19 May.’

An earlier announcement from the school said: ‘Due to an increase in COVID cases in our community, mask wearing will be mandatory for all staff students and visitors to LGHS for the next 5 days from May 16.’

Liverpool Girls High School has almost 900 pupils.

At Orange High School, principal Ali McLennan wrote to parents: ‘Due to the impact of COVID-19 some of our students and teaching staff cannot attend school.

‘The positive COVID-19 cases have particularly impacted our staff.’

‘Students who cannot learn from home will be provided supervision should they attend school,’ Ms McLennan added.

Year 11 and Year 12 students will still attend school as usual, the note from Ms McLennan said.

Orange High School has more than 1,000 students.

Orange State High School’s stay at home guidelines:

Year 10 – Tuesday, May 16 (one day only)

Year 9 – Wednesday May 17 (one day only)

Year 8 – Thursday May 18 (one day only)

Year 7 – Friday May 19 (one day only)
