Maltese Falcon writer Dashiell Hammett’s former San Francisco apartment building has hit the market for $4.3million.

The 23-unit building, located at 237 Leavenworth Street, is located in the Tenderloin District and is being sold in conjunction with neighboring building 620 Eddy Street for a total of 58 units. The combined price for the two buildings is $10.5million, but Leavenworth is listed alone at $4.3million.

Hammett lived in the Leavenworth Street building during the early 1920s, just before he wrote his famous novel, Maltese Falcon, a detective novel set in America. He would go on to move to Post Street, also in the Tenderloin District, to write his novel.

According to the Tenderloin Museum, the novelist, who died in 1961, wrote the majority of his ‘ground-breaking hard-boiled detective fiction’ in the area.

Hammett’s building is filled with only studio apartments. Average rent for a studio in the area runs for about $2,500, according to Apartments.com. It is unclear what the what the building, which is fully leased, is running rent prices at.

Interior photos of the apartment building show the lobby area featuring a linoleum flooring and splashes of green and peach for color. It is decorated with rows of golden mailboxes and a painting that hangs on the opposite wall.

Apartments in the building feature hardwood flooring, light-colored wood cabinets, white appliances, and clean white paint. Despite the building being built in 1922, the apartments appear to be renovated with modern touches.

The novel was made into a movie in 1941 – more than a decade after it was first published. It is considered one of the first film noir.

Hammett left San Francisco for New York in 1930, where he wrote his other famous work, The Thin Man.

He died in New York City in 1961.
