Here come the teams
How are the nerves?
Torrid conditions at Old Trafford
‘We can expect Liverpool to dominate the ball’
It’s hard to argue with the team Erik ten Hag has picked here at a wet and windy Old Trafford. There is pace in the team – through Rashford, Garnacho, and Hojlund – and that is the thing that ultimately hurt Liverpool in the FA Cup game here and once again provides them with some hope today.
We can expect Liverpool to dominate the ball once again here but they must be more clinical than they were in throwing the cup game away three weeks ago.
‘Big opportunity for Rashford’
Erik ten Hag has just had a chat to Sky and he’s right about Marcus Rashford and this being a big opportunity for him. Antony was immense away to Chelsea and can feel hard done by to be dropped to the bench but he won’t be warming that for long if Rashford flatters to deceive.
This has been a fixture he’s relished and having scored here in the cup game he’ll need to step up again today. Conor Bradley is great for Liverpool but United’s left side can cause plenty of headaches for Liverpool today.

Jamie Carragher: ‘FA Cup defeat big lesson for Liverpool’
I think the FA Cup game was a big lesson for that Liverpool team. There were eight of them who had never played at Old Trafford before. I think that lesson will really help today.
There was a stage in the second half of the game where it became almost a testimonial. That was a big mistake. They didn’t kill the game off. I don’t think they will make that mistake again because when you come to Old Trafford, you never feel safe as a Liverpool player.
Even if they are 2-0 up with 15 minutes to go, something can still go wrong. You have always got to guard against that but Liverpool should have confidence knowing that if they play well, they should win the game.
United’s defensive frailties
McTominay out injured
Gary Neville: ‘If United get through first 30, I think they will be OK’
I think these Manchester United players will have been really down on Friday, after the Chelsea game. They will have been thinking, “This is the worst fixture we could have next.”
How I see them doing well today is if they grow into the game. Liverpool gave them encouragement in the last game in the FA Cup by leaving them in the match. I am a little bit worried about today, particularly the first half hour. But if United get through that, I think they will be OK.
Marcus Rashford is such an important player for United. They don’t have world-class players throughout their squad. But what they have in Rashford is someone who can deliver world-class moments. I think he is a person who can cause Conor Bradley and whoever is right centre-back problems.
Atmosphere building
‘Hard to look past Liverpool’
It is hard to think that Manchester United have anything more than a puncher’s chance today. In a one-off game, anything can happen, of course, and United will try to bring the same spirit they conjured for their FA Cup victory here recently. It’s still hard to look past Liverpool, though.
Mo Salah has a terrific record against United and with the home defence depleted again, it will be hard to keep him off the scoresheet.

ETH and Klopp call for a stop to tragedy chanting
I just see it this way, that two of the biggest clubs in the world, let’s just show a bit of class in these moments.
So don’t sing this or that, just show class, have a fight on the pitch, let’s just play football, if you want to be happy, if you lose, whatever but besides all of that just show a bit of class, that would be my wish really for all of us.
As such, it is part of my duty to remind every supporter fortunate enough to be at the game that it must be enjoyed in the proper way, and not used as an excuse for abusing rival fans about Hillsborough, Heysel, or any other historic tragedies.

Jurgen Klopp: ‘We want to be in fight for title’
Obviously, the next one [Manchester United] is the big one, like they all are. Somebody said we had the best fixture list or schedule; I looked at it and I really don’t know how you can have had that idea, maybe I’m too negative but it’s a tough one, good opponents.
We are ready and we want to be in that fight, so let’s see what we can make of it.
