A massive fire has broken out at an industrial estate sending huge plumes of smoke billowing over homes in Manchester.

Eight fire crews descended on the scene on Clifton Street in Miles Platting at 3.40am this morning where a fire is believed to have broken out at two industrial buildings.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said that four fire engines remain at the scene extinguishing the remaining pockets of fire, which had spread to four units at one point causing parts of the buildings to collapse.

They added that no casualties have been reported and there is no evidence of anyone missing, but they are not able to confirm this until the area is safe.

It is not clear if anyone was inside either of the buildings when the blaze broke out, while the cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

They added that a number of the buildings in the industrial estate have been converted into churches.

A cordon has been erected as work continues to put out the fire and make the area safe, with Hulme Hall Lane having been taped off between Oldham Road and Bradford Road.

Several business owners are being prevented from accessing their units on the industrial estate due to the fire.

One man told the Manchester Evening News he was due to work today but now won’t be able to.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service Station Manager Ken Booth, officer in charge at the scene, said: ‘Firefighters have been working since the early hours tackling a large fire at an industrial estate on Clifton Street, Manchester.

‘Four fire engines are still at the scene fighting the remaining pockets of fire. The fire had spread to four units, causing parts of the buildings to collapse.

‘The hard work of our crews stopped the fire spreading any further, saving a number of commercial spaces and warehouses.

‘No casualties have been reported and there is no evidence of anyone missing. However, we will not be able to confirm this until the area is safe.

‘Hulme Hall Lane (A6010) has now been reopened but Clifton Street and Lord North Street remain closed.
