A woman has lost her licence after driving erratically around families with young children on a busy Australian beach.

Bizarre footage shows a red Mazda SUV weaving between bemused people in swimsuits wandering on Moana Beach, south of Adelaide.

The car is seen slowing down and breaking only when a toddler with a dog stands directly in front of its path.

A parent told 9News that the driver was ‘completely irresponsible’ and that the incident ‘should never have happened’.

One witness guessed the SUV had reached up to 60km/h along the beach at one point.  

The car eventually became bogged in the sand and its occupants tried unsuccessfully to dig the vehicle out.

A girl who spoke to reporters on the beach claimed the driver ‘flipped people off’ when they confronted her over her behaviour.

‘The person got bogged right after, an off duty cop called backup and five cop cars came as the driver was arrested,’ a person posted on a the Adelaide social media page.

The driver was asked to complete a breathalyser test and refused, so was taken to a nearby hospital for blood alcohol test.

South Australian Police told Daily Mail Australia the driver was banned for a year as a result of the incident.

‘Just after 8.30pm Saturday 8 January, witnesses reported a Mazda SUV was driving at speed on the beach near children and had become bogged in the sand,’ SA Police said in a statement.

‘Patrols attended at the scene and located the vehicle and the driver still on the beach.

‘Police requested a breath test from the driver who allegedly refused to comply with the breath analysis test.

‘She was taken to the Noarlunga Hospital where a sample of blood was obtained for analysis.

‘The driver a 38-year-old woman from Glenelg North was reported for drive in a manner dangerous, fail to comply with breath test.

‘She was issued with a 12 month instant loss of licence and her car was impounded. She will attend court at a later date.’
