READ The Supreme Court’s landmark decision on affirmative action in FULL: How the justices ruled on decision that will fundamentally change college admissions

On Thursday the Supreme Court ruled that colleges could no longer factor in race when considering potential students. 

The justices decided in a 6-3 opinion that Harvard University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC)’s race-based affirmative action admissions policies are unconstitutional

The decision, years in the making, means universities across the country will have to revamp programs they use to consider thousands of applicants.

The ruling ends decades-old ‘affirmative action’ policy that was designed to boost the number of black and Hispanic students in colleges. 

Now universities will have to look to new ways to better incorporate minority groups and ensure representation among student bodies.

Chief Justice John Roberts wrote the majority opinion. 

‘Because Harvard’s and UNC’s admissions programs lack sufficiently focused and measurable objectives warranting the use of race, unavoidably employ race in a negative manner, involve racial stereotyping, and lack meaningful end points, those admissions programs cannot be reconciled with the guarantees of the Equal Protection Clause,’ he wrote.
