Gruesome remains of an abandoned morgue have been pictured showing horrifying images of rotting organs.

The old mortuary, in an undisclosed location in France, had been a pathology school for medical students, but was deserted after the institution’s closure in 2010.

Despite some of the remains being left to molder since its closure 13 years ago, some of the decomposing material had evidently been stolen.

One grim image showed a human heart left to rot in a jar, stored improperly and left behind when the building was abandoned.

‘I will never forget the smell of the human heart,’ said photographer and explorer Chloe Urbex, who ventured into the uninhabited building.

The site had previously acted as a mortuary and pathology school for teaching medical students about illness and disease. The building was permanently closed due to public funding cuts.

Despite sitting abandoned for so long, a generator in the autopsy rooms was still plugged in and running, causing a loud noise throughout the building.

Untouched fridge cabinets and discarded medical equipment also remained.

Organs like hearts and brains were left in jars. But after being stored carelessly, with lids missing, they were corroded and discoloured.

One heart, left in an upturned bucket, had begun to mold and attract maggots. There was evidence of many more organs being stored in the morgue but it appeared they had been stolen.

Until recently the building had on-site security staff that lived on the premises, but they had since left after now-aborted construction work began on the site.

Explorer and photographer Chloe Urbex captured the shocking images.

‘Researching abandoned places, I came across a mortuary located in France, that supposedly had jarred human organs, a brain and bones left,’ she said.

‘The human bones, brain and some of the jarred human organs were missing,’ she added.

‘Mortuary explores has been a favourite of mine for a long time however, I have never set foot in an abandoned building with human organs left so carelessly before.

‘The hearts were left in open glass jars in the basement.

‘Upstairs where the autopsy rooms sit, loud generators are still plugged in and operating, strangely, they were quite loud and gave us a bit of a fright.

‘I was relieved that I got the photographs because it’s an exploration that I’ve wanted to see for quite a while, but I will never forget the smell of the human heart.’
