The cost of food staples, such as bread and butter, has been slashed in the supermarket giant Sainsbury’s, providing relief to cash-strapped families feeling the effects of the cost-of-living crisis.
The supermarket announced today that it would cut the price of some of its lines of bread and butter in response to the commodity prices for wheat and butter beginning to fall.
The UK’s second-biggest supermarket chain lowered the price of its own-brand 250g salted and unsalted butter by 5 per cent to £1.89.
It is also cutting the price of its 800g Soft White Medium, Wholemeal Medium, Wholemeal Thick and Toastie White loaves of bread by 11 per cent to 75p.
It is the latest in a series of grocery price cuts, including the price of milk. After Tesco announced it would reducing the price of milk by 5p, Sainsbury’s along with Alid, Lidl, Asda and M&S followed suit.

It comes a month after most of the UK’s major supermarkets, including Sainsburys, dropped the price of milk by 5p
Rhian Bartlett, food commercial director at Sainsbury’s, said: ‘We have been battling hard to beat inflation and whenever we are paying less for the products we buy from our suppliers, we will pass those savings on to customers.
‘As we see the commodity prices starting to fall for wheat and butter, we’re able to lower our prices on two of the products people buy most often bread and butter.
‘We are committed to offering our customers the best value possible so they can be confident that they are getting a great deal on their everyday essentials when they shop with us.’
The supermarket giant said the price drop will not affect how much it pays farmers.
It comes after the UK Prices Index (CPI) inflation peaked at 11.1 per cent late last year, with food prices to soar at the beginning of this year.
Earlier this month, M&S announced that it would price lock 100 of its food and home essential items at least until early July.
Including items such as washing up liquid, Granny Smith Apples and mushrooms.
For more than a year, families all over the country have been faced with a huge surge in supermarket prices amid rampant inflation.

Figures from the consumer group Which? revealed last month that food staples such as cheddar cheese, white bread and porridge oats had soared by nearly 18 per cent in the last year.
Researchers looked at 26,242 products across eight major supermarkets for the study, which did not include two other major retailers, Iceland and Co-Op. But they also pointed out that inflation was not a measure of absolute price – with Aldi and Lidl having the lowest prices.
It found that overall inflation on food and drink at supermarkets continued to rise in March to 17.2 per cent – up from 16.5 per cent the month before.
Cheddar cheese prices on average increased by 28.3 per cent across he eight major supermarkets.
