By Wednesday morning, temperatures are set to drop below freezing in parts of Tasmania, Victoria, NSW and even Queensland.

Sky News meteorologist Alison Osborne said the record-low temperatures heralded a significant cold outbreak for many parts of the country.

‘The temperatures, goodness me, they are looking cold even for this time of year … It will be a hard middle of the week to get out of bed,’ she said.

The conditions will be cold but clear, with widespread frost and freezing fog.

Sydney and surrounding areas will shiver through the coldest winter morning in five years in June as temperatures fall to an icy 5 degrees.

Minimum temperatures will struggle to get above 7 and 8 degrees over the weekend with similar temperatures expected throughout next week.

Temperatures in Canberra will drop to well below freezing later this week, with Tuesday to start at -4 before warming to a measly 10 degrees.

Wednesday morning will drop even lower to -5 degrees, with -1 on Thursday.
