Margot Robbie raised eyebrows at the Oscars on Sunday as she ditched her trademark Barbie pink in favour of a black Versace gown.
The Australian beauty, 33, displayed her trim physique in the shimmery, structured look with help from stylist Andrew Mukamal.
But critics rushed to social media to express their disappointment with Margot’s garb, branding her outfit as underwhelming and uncomplimentary to her curvy physique.
‘She should have owned the carpet. This is… not even renting,’ one user lamented, as another added: ‘Such a boring look. Come on.’
However other social media users have theorised that Margot opted to wear black to let her co-star, America Ferrera, 39, who was nominated at the 96th Academy Awards, stand out in pink.

In contrast to Margot’s muted tones, Ferrera looked every inch a movie star in a skintight Barbie pink gown and Pomellato jewellery.
The pale pink sequined gown fit her to perfection showing off her small waistline, sculpted arms and toned legs.
Digital creator Holly Agnes uploaded her theory on the situation to her Instagram page.

Holly pointed out that Margot had been ‘method dressing’, wearing pink outfits throughout the Barbie press tour while Ferrera’s outfits were notably ‘in the background’.
Holly soon highlighted that the co-stars swapped styles for the Oscars so America could have her limelight ‘by swapping colours, they swapped attention,’ she said.
‘This was totally intentional and the right thing to do,’ she added.
Ferrera lost out in the Best Supporting Actress category to Da’Vine Joy Randolph, who won for her performance in The Holdovers.
