A spectacular crash has left a van partially suspended in mid-air sparking traffic chaos which forced motorists to abandon their cars and start walking. 

A white van was left balancing on top of a Range Rover on Sydney‘s South Dowling Street, in the city’s inner east following a crash.

The front of the van was smashed into a concrete road divider, while the rear was left resting at a 45-degree angle on the cabin of the four-wheel drive.

Emergency services were called to the scene and were able to get the occupants of the two vehicles out safely. 

The male driver of the van was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The female driver of the car and three children who were passengers were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. 

The kids were seen waving to their mother in dramatic crash scene images as they passed her ambulance. 

Emergency services attended the accident after 3pm on Monday afternoon and the occupants of the two vehicles were taken to hospital

A man was later seen running shirtless to the scene with his phone.

He took pictures of the accident and is believed to be the husband of the woman behind the wheel of the Ranger Rover. 

The crash has closed two lanes of the road, which is the major artery to Sydney airport from the city.

With traffic backing up several kilometres some frustrated travelers began walking towards the airport

This has caused south-bound traffic to be backed up for several kilometres.

Pedestrians were observed having abandoned their vehicles and walking with luggage toward the airport along the road. 

With only one lane remaining open motorists are advised to allow extra travel time and to check the Live Traffic NSW website or app before taking the route.
