Two elderly women received a surprise when their Christmas grocery shopping was paid for by a kind supermarket manager.

The women were shopping at Woolworths, Warriewood on Sydney‘s northern beaches on Tuesday and tried to pay in a way no longer accepted by the store.

Broadcaster and author Wendy Harmer, who lives in the area, shared the story on her Twitter account.

‘Two elderly ladies @woolworths Warriewood today trying to pay for groceries with a cheque,’ she wrote.

‘Store doesn’t accept cheques, they’re distressed – will they have to put it all back?’

The women’s distress did not last long, though.

‘Store manager steps in, takes care of their $200 bill and says ‘Merry Christmas’,’ Harmer wrote.

The former ABC radio host said it was ‘So nice to see’.

She added in a further tweet that the women ‘had offered to go to the bank to get cash… but the bank wasn’t close (they never are these days).

‘So it was a kind gesture,’ she said.

Five days out from Christmas Day, it was just the kind of story people needed to hear, with hundreds liking, forwarding and responding to Harmer’s tweet

One woman even had a similar story, saying ‘Woolies is amazing’.

‘I had gift cards one year to buy Christmas food and they weren’t working. Trolley loaded to the max.

‘Woolies manager walked me to the car and waived the bill. I was sobbing,’ she said.

Some were surprised that the senior citizens’ preferred payment plan was now out of date.

‘Didn’t know that they no longer accept cheques. They used to but it’s been many moons since I had a cheque account,’ they said.

Another said, ‘Brilliant. I ask everybody, if you see someone is having trouble paying for groceries this Christmas… step in and help if you can.

‘Just the relief on the person’s face will make you happy.’

One responder simply replied ‘Bravo, Woolies,’ while another wrote ‘How absolutely wonderful.’

Woolworths responded to a request for comment by Daily Mail Australia stating that while the store manager was unavailable, ‘they are very happy the ladies were able to finish their shopping and hope they enjoy the Christmas season’.

The supermarket giant also noted it was celebrating a ‘season of good acts’, with more than 1,000 surprise moments for customers.

‘As our store teams know their local customers best, we left it to them to choose who to surprise, and what the gift could be.

‘Some of the special moments have included our stores paying for a customer’s trolley of groceries, gifting a hamper of goodies, or providing a young family with their Christmas ham.’

Daily Mail Australia has also contacted Wendy Harmer seeking comment for this story.
