Wife vanishes while snorkelling after husband claims he fought off a SHARK in Hawaii: Parts of her bathing suit and snorkel gear are found

A woman has disappeared after she and her husband tried to fight off a shark while snorkeling in Hawaii.

The husband swam to shore but only parts of the his wife’s bathing suit and snorkeling gear washed up on the beach on Thursday.

The name of the couple has not been released. Search crews were deployed after being alerted to the shark attack 50-yards from shore at Keawakapu Point in South Maui.

The husband told authorities he searched for his wife but swam back to shore after he was unable to find her.

Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources senior communications manager Dan Dennison said he was unable to comment on the details of the attack.

The missing snorkeler was last seen wearing a blue bathing suit and snorkeling gear, according to local reports.

Dennison was unable to provide any information on the type of shark involved and said there have had no reports of sharks in the water.

Crews from the US Coast Guard, Maui Fire’s Air 1 helicopter, Maui Ocean Safety and Maui Fire Department have been involved in the search operation.

First responders and officers from the DLNR Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement are on the scene trying to find her.

The Maui Fire Department has multiple firefighters on skis and divers and MFD Air 1 and U.S. Coast Guard aircraft are conducting aerial searches.

The MFD rescue boat is also responding. More details will be released when they become available, police said.

Swimmers were encouraged to stay clear of the area for emergency operations and traffic.

Shark warning signs are up from the Mana Kai condominiums to Ulua Point and will remain in place at least until noon Friday, after an all-clear is issued.
