South Africa has been making headlines across the globe for its burgeoning food scene and with good reason.

Our use of fresh and invigorating local, indigenous ingredients have been wowing international guests for some time and it doesn’t appear to be slowing down.

As a nation, we’re accustomed to the melting pot of cultures and traditions that have been passed down through our colourful history and one thing that stands out above the rest, is our love of the sweet.

Who can say no to a sticky koeksuster dripping with syrup?

We’ve rounded up a few recipes that have been given a modern make-over, incorporating fun and different techniques without compromising on the core flavour and essence of the classic dish.

Check them out!

1. Milk tart phyllo cups – swap the rich puff pastry for a lighter and crisper phyllo dough. Presentation also gets a new look by making the milk tart into little individual portions.

2. Caramel malva pudding– Super indulgent with an added caramel hit. You can’t go wrong

3. Cafe mocha mousse with Amarula cream– A light and fluffy mousse that’s spiked with a bit of Amarula liqueur.

4. Peppermint Crisp tart parfait – you really need to try this. It’s Peppermint Crisp tart on another level!

5. Amasi and condensed milk ice cream – creamy, tangy and just tastes like more! You won’t be able to put the spoon down.
