Roy worked as a truck driver with his half-brother J.W. to supplement his money. He served in WWII and received a combat badge. Emmett Till walked to Bryant’s Grocery with relatives and friends on the night of August 24 1955 after picking cotton in the hot sun. Men went to the store alone or in groups to purchase lemonade or chewing gum. Emmett walked in and purchased two cents worth of chew. However, what occurred next has yet to be confirmed. She bolted from the shop. Outside the youngsters said she was going to get a gun. Emmett and his friends fled terrified.
The national and foreign press descended on the scene when the trial began in September. Roy Carolyn and J. W. all became famous. Some journalists remarked on Roy and Carolyn’s “handsome looks” as well as J. W.’s tall height and large cigars. Carolyn was even referred to as “Roy Bryant’s most beautiful wife” and a “crossroads Marilyn Monroe.”
Carolyn testified under oath but away from the jurors that Emmett made “ugly remarks” to her before whistling.
Following their acquittal, the men sold their tale for $4000 to reporter William Bradford Huie. Two of their defense lawyers assisted in the preparation of the interview which was published in Look magazine in January 1956. Following the town’s outpouring of support at the trial the men opened up about how they murdered the young Chicago adolescent. But shortly after the article was published both men were shunned.
Emmett Till a Chicago adolescent was murdered in August 1955. While visiting relatives in Mississippi the black boy was lynched. No one has ever been convicted of the crime but an outstanding warrant for Carolyn Bryant Donham was recently found.
Donham will not be prosecuted according to the Mississippi Attorney General’s office because there is no fresh evidence in the case. Carolyn Bryant’s birth is officially recorded on this date in 1934. In the Emmett Till case, she is a white American clerk witness and petitioner.
Timothy Tyson a senior research scientist at Duke University revealed that Bryant confessed to fabricating the most sensational portions of her testimony in 2007 at the age of 72. “That portion isn’t true,” she said of her claim that Till had made verbal and physical advances on her. She couldn’t recall the remainder of what happened that evening in the country store. (Carolyn is now 86 years old and her family has kept her present location a secret.)
