Pratt had attended the Glasgow School of Art in Scotland from 1957 to 1959. He returned to Newfoundland during the summers to work as a construction surveyor at the American Naval Base in Argentina.

Pratt’s art is on display in museums and galleries across Canada, including the National Gallery of Canada.
His paintings and prints have included views of the sea, snow heaped on an inverted dory, and the desolate expanses of the Trans-Canada Highway.

Pratt served on the Stamp Design Advisory Committee of the Canadian government from 1972 to 1975, as well as the board of the Canada Council for the Arts from 1975 to 1981.
