While working in academia, her role varied from time to time as she worked as Rehabilitation Specialist, Assistant Speech Pathologist, Language Assistant, and Reading Instructor for schools in Blount County and Alcoa City.
In addition, Yolanda worked for the State of Tennessee under the rehabilitation service division as a Rehabilitation Specialist and Counselor for several years. If we talk about her most recent working experience, she was a full-time substitute teacher for the Birmingham City School System, where she worked for three years in 2016.
Her multiple yet versatile academic degrees allowed her to work in several departments throughout her career. Among these, helping students or any individual for that matter, transition into the employment world was her main work.
First Black Female Running For Alabama Governor’s Office
On June 11, 2022, Flowers made history as she secured herself a spot as a Democratic representative for 2022 Alabama’s gubernatorial race.
After defeating her runaway opponent, State Senator Malika Sander-Fortier, Flowers became the first black female Alabamian to win a seat in the forthcoming general election on November 8, 2022. Birmingham pride accumulated more than 55.1% of votes, while Sander Fortier lost to Yolanda by almost 10% of the total votes.
The win advanced her to the ballot in the general election on November 8. As the first black female nominee for the governor, Flowers will face a competitive battle against the current governor, Kay Ivey, who has been ruling the state since 2017.
During her campaign and debate, Yolanda promised the people of Alabama that she would bring reconstructional change to the state’s healthcare, criminal justice, economy, and education. As she worked in special education and vocational program, her main goal in the education sector is to bring early change and psychological evaluation in place so that the specific needs of students are understood and met.

Around the 1980s, Yolanda decided to get married to a young man. The exact date of her marriage is not confirmed; however, we know that Yolanda Flowers got married to a young and local Birmingham man named Curtis Lynn Flowers. Curtis and Yolanda shared a romantic relationship before they shared wedding vows in the 80s.
