Chelsea have a lot of versatile players in their squad.

Cole Palmer, for example, can play on the right and as a No.10.

The 22-year-old was sensational for Chelsea last season, coming up with 33 goal contributions in the Premier League for them.

Another attacker, Christopher Nkunku, also showed versatility when he was able to play. Mauricio Pochettino used the Frenchman both on the left and in a more central position last term.

Further back, Marc Cucurella was used in more than one role as well.

Marc Cucurella shares his favourite role

It will be interesting to see how Enzo Maresca utilises the likes of Cucurella and Nkunku next season.

Cucurella played as a left-back, right-back and inverted full-back during the 2023/24 campaign.

He recently suggested that he prefers the last of the three.

In an interview on Chelsea’s official website, the 25-year-old said: “Changing my role has been nice. I try to do whatever I can to help the side and if I play in more positions and it helps the team, I’m happy because I have more possibilities to play.

“I think first in the first part of the season, I played right-back as well and as always, I’ll try to do my best to help the team and to win the game. Whenever I’m on the pitch, I’m happy to help out but for sure I like to play this position [inverted left-back].”

Marc Cucurella enjoying inverted full-back role

Coming inside into midfield, Cucurella has been able to see more of the ball and get more involved in games.

It is no surprise that he has enjoyed playing as an inverted left-back.

Pochettino has obviously left Chelsea now, but that does not necessarily spell the end of Cucurella being used in that role.

It is something that Maresca utilised at Leicester City, so it would not be a shock if he did the same thing in west London with Cucurella.

The £175,000-a-week Spaniard (Spotrac) will be hoping so. There, he looks to have really enjoyed his football. Cucurella will now be aiming to keep Ben Chilwell and Levi Colwill out of the team.
