Former Chelsea manager Graham Potter has been asked about potentially replacing Gareth Southgate as England boss.

The FA are looking for a new man for the Wembley dugout after Gareth Southgate’s decision to resign following Euro 2024. Graham Potter is one of several names currently being linked with the job.

The former Chelsea manager is available, being out of work since he was sacked by the Blues last April.

However, Jamie Carragher’s not convinced by Potter after watching his struggles at Stamford Bridge.

What has former Chelsea boss Graham Potter said about replacing Gareth Southgate?

As an Englishman, managing the Three Lions would probably be a dream for Potter. He is not the only man who the FA are expected to consider.

As well as the 49-year-old, England could also target Thomas Tuchel. They are just a couple of names the FA could look at.

Potter has now been asked about succeeding Southgate; however, he was very coy on the subject.

When the topic was put to him, Potter told Sky Sports as he picked up an award: “I think today’s not the day to speak about that. I think I’m here to get this award. I’m obviously very proud to get this award. I’m also very proud of the job that Gareth Southgate did.

“I think, as an Englishman in football, I don’t think there is anybody that has more respect than he has, how he conducted himself, him and his staff, qualifying for the tournament, going deep into tournaments, getting the country behind the team is an amazing job. And I think I’d like to wish him well.

Who else could Graham Potter have to beat if he wants the England job?

Tuchel will not be Potter’s only competition if the former Chelsea and Brighton & Hove Albion boss does want to succeed Southgate.

According to The Telegraph, Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou is another name who is expected to be considered by the FA for the England job.

In terms of managers currently without a role, the likes of Mauricio Pochettino and Frank Lampard are also available. Lampard could get the England U21 job if he misses out on the senior position.

Ultimately, there are quite a few options for the FA to choose from. It means Potter could face a real battle if he wants the gig, especially with really talented coaches like Tuchel and Pochettino out of work.

And having not put an end to the speculation when he had the chance to, it looks like Potter may fancy the challenge, which is a big one.
