Chelsea could have another chance to sign one player from one of their Premier League rivals in the summer.

Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson was the subject of an enquiry from Chelsea in the January transfer window, according to journalist Simon Phillips.

A formal offer failed to come to fruition in the end, but it looks like Chelsea will have another opportunity to land the 31-year-old if they are still interested in him. Another journalist, Dean Jones, has told GiveMeSport that Newcastle are going to sell players at the end of the season and that Wilson is a likely candidate to leave.

The Englishman has managed to make an impact when he has played for the Magpies this season, scoring seven goals in 16 league appearances.

However, with clubs really having to worry about the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules these days, sacrifices at St James’ Park and elsewhere may have to be made in the summer.

Newcastle could sell Callum Wilson at the end of the season

Jones thinks Wilson’s future at Newcastle is still far from certain.

On the centre-forward, he said: “They’re going to sell players. I’m just not sure that they will offload anyone like Bruno Guimaraes or Alexander Isak. I still think, if you’re looking at a senior player that will leave, it will be someone more like Kieran Trippier or Callum Wilson.”

Will Chelsea make a move for Callum Wilson in the summer?

We think Chelsea’s interest in Wilson has probably cooled now. With Nicolas Jackson going off to the Africa Cup of Nations and Christopher Nkunku picking up another injury last month, he looked like a good short-term option.

In a summer transfer window, though, teams plan more long-term. It is not the middle of the season and it is easier to do deals, as selling clubs have time to find replacements.

When you consider that, then, you would expect Chelsea to prioritise a younger and more elite forward who was perhaps unavailable in January instead of Wilson.

The England international, who cost Newcastle £20m (BBC Sport), would not be a bad back-up striker at Stamford Bridge when you look at his goal record. But that is a role Jackson can take up if Chelsea do manage to buy a new first-choice No.9.
