A lot has been said about Chelsea’s finances of late.
Chelsea made a pre-tax loss of £90.1m for the 12-month period ending on 30 June 2023, as highlighted by one report from The Athletic.
However, journalist Ben Jacobs has claimed in his column for Si Phillips Talks Chelsea that the club can still afford Napoli striker Victor Osimhen.
On Substack, he said: “Can Chelsea afford Victor Osimhen? From what I am told the answer is yes, on paper; but in practice it may be at the expense of other names in key positions.”
Jacobs also claimed that the 25-year-old remains keen on a move to the Premier League this summer.
Former England manager Fabio Capello does not think Napoli will be able to replace Osimhen if they sell him to Chelsea or another club at the end of the season.
Chelsea can still afford Victor Osimhen
If Chelsea really are still in a position to land Osimhen this summer, then it is great news. Up front is one area of Mauricio Pochettino‘s squad that does not look too strong.

To be fair to Nicolas Jackson, the team’s first-choice striker, he has not done too badly this season.
Chelsea signed the 22-year-old from Villarreal for £32m last summer, which is not the largest transfer fee in this day and age, and he has managed to score 12 goals in all competitions. It is not impossible that he gets to 20 before the end of May.
However, the Blues are still lacking numbers in that area of the pitch, with Armando Broja joining west London rivals Fulham on loan in the January transfer window. At 22, Jackson is also far from being the finished article.
Osimhen is a lot closer if the Nigerian is not already. He scored 31 times for Napoli last term so looks like the real deal.
Should Chelsea not be able to land Osimhen for whatever reason, they do seem to have alternatives to the former Lille man, including RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko.
