Pundit Scott Minto has now shared what he heard before this season began about one of Chelsea’s top players.
Thiago Silva announced earlier this week that he was coming to the end of his time at the club, and he would be moving on this summer.
The emotional statement saw the Brazilian hint that he was not done at Stamford Bridge, potentially using the coaching he has been learning at the club in the future.
The veteran moving on leaves a clear gap at the back for the Blues, with their only real experienced head leaving the likes of Levi Colwill to step up in the coming months.
It could also mean a new era of how the club defend, with Minto claiming to TalkSPORT he heard before this season started that their methods had largely been revolving around Silva up to now.
Minto heard Chelsea were accomodating to Silva in defence
He said: “It does (leave a void in the Chelsea backfour). I think on the pitch, he is still a classy player, isn’t he? I have seen a lot of Chelsea this season, and he is almost like a centre-midfielder playing centre-back because he can start the attacks, he can play one-two touch, he can read the game very well.
“I did hear at the end of last season where they were told that he wanted a high-line and he was saying, no, we need to drop off. So, just from an age point of view, I think it doesn’t really matter what your age is, but if physically he can’t play those high lines and Chelsea want to play it, then it’s difficult to keep him in the side.”
Chelsea want to sign new defender
It has been widely reported that Chelsea are going to be in the market for a new defender at the end of the season, with another current first team member also seemingly not safe at the club.
Reports linking Trevoh Chalobah with a move away from the club have refused to disappear, despite the fact that he has proven to be an important member of the first team in recent weeks.
Considering he has shown an ability to play pretty much anywhere across the backline, it would be seen as a bit odd to see them so desperate to part ways with the Englishman at the end of the season.
