Everyone has that glory hunter mate who doesn’t actually want to admit they are a glory hunter.
Well, unless you are Marcus, who called The Sports Bar on talkSPORT to admit to his ‘shocking’ team hopping over the years.
We’d all like to experience the unbridled joy of our team winning a trophy and truly dominating week in, week out.
But for most of us, we follow our teams through thick and thin whether that be relegation, promotion, winning silverware or just mid-table mediocrity… otherwise we’d all be Man City fans right now.
However, there are a select group of people who unashamedly swap teams. Let’s call them out for what they are… glory hunters.
Marcus has supported three of the biggest clubs in the land and explained to The Sports Bar why he switched allegiances.
He said: “I began with Man United in the 90s. I think the first game I remember was the treble final. I remember the [FA Cup] semi-final as well when [Ryan] Giggs took his shirt off to celebrate his goal.
“I followed them blindly, had the sticker book and everything. Then I think it was around the time [Danny] Murphy scored a free-kick at Old Trafford and I thought ‘I kind of like Liverpool and what they’re doing’. So I switched to them.”
Shocked host Adam Catterall asked: “You went from United to Liverpool?”
Marcus: “Yeah. I was around 10 years old.
“Then Liverpool won the ‘treble’ – in inverted commas [UEFA Cup, FA Cup and League Cup in 2001]. They beat Arsenal in that final and I had some sympathy for Arsenal.
“Two years later, I remember because I had just started secondary school, Liverpool lost to Basel and got knocked out of the Champions League group stage in that 02/03 season.
“My friend supported Arsenal and I thought ‘that’s it, I’m supporting Arsenal’.”
Catterall: “You went Invincible hunting! Have you managed to stick to a team?”
Marcus: “I’m Arsenal through and through now.”
Catterall: “Through and through? Until someone else comes along that you feel a bit of sympathy for.
“United to Liverpool to Arsenal… respect, man.”
Marcus: “Shocking…”
And everyone listening probably agreed.
