Silva was preparing for his fourth season with Real Sociedad, the LaLiga outfit he joined after leaving Man City in 2020.

Relevo say that with Silva’s age a full recovery from such a long-term injury would be unlikely, and he will now bring forward his retirement.

A four-time Premier League winner with City, the Spaniard was signed in 2010 from Valencia in a huge coup for the newly-monied side.

He went on to become a club legend at the Etihad, a stadium which now has his statue placed outside.

At international level, Silva was key for a Spain team that went on an incredible period of dominance, winning Euro 2008, the 2010 World Cup, and Euro 2012.

He’s since won the Copa del Rey at Real Sociedad, cementing his status as one of the game’s all-time greats.
