Bruno Fernandes will be Manchester United’s new captain for the the 2023/24 season.
The Red Devils midfielder takes over from former skipper Harry Maguire, who recently confirmed he was no longer going to wear the armband for his side following a conversation with Erik ten Hag.
Now, the club have officially confirmed his teammate Fernandes will be Maguire’s replacement.
A statement on Man United’s website read: “Bruno Fernandes has been named as the new club captain of Manchester United.
“The Portuguese midfielder has already worn the armband for United on numerous occasions and Erik ten Hag has confirmed that he will now lead the team on a permanent basis.
“Fernandes has scored 64 goals and contributed 54 assists in just 185 games for the club since joining in 2020.
“As captain, the two-time Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year will continue to drive the highest standards throughout the squad as United push for success in the 2023/24 season and beyond.”
Fernandes wore the armband on numerous occasions last term whilst Maguire struggled to earn consistent minutes.
Ten Hag even referred to him as captain a few times in post-match interviews too.
After their draw against Tottenham in April, the Dutchman said: ‘”He’s tough, he takes responsibility, he wants to play and, of course, we’re happy he’s there because he’s a big players for us and he makes a big impact in every game.
“He’s our captain, so we’re really happy.”
Fernandes is yet to comment on his new role, but did post snaps of him heading off to America to continue Man United’s pre season tour shortly before the announcement with the caption ‘we’re off on tour’.
Fernandes will take on his new role officially for the first time this Saturday, as Man United face Premier League rivals Arsenal in New Jersey.
