Greenwood saw charges of attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behaviour dropped in February.

His future at United has remained uncertain since, although he was recently spotted back in training privately amid a potential return to football.

Even though a conclusion to their investigation is yet to be reached, United may already be planning his future.

Boss Erik ten Hag is said to be opposed to selling Greenwood, who hasn’t played for the club since a 1-0 win against West Ham in January 2022.

His name was included on United’s retained list following the conclusion of of the 2022/23 campaign.

Recent reports suggested that a loan move to Spain, Italy or Turkey may be likeliest options this summer.

Greenwood still has two years remaining on his current deal and has the option of a further 12 months.

He is said to have told his friends that he will never play for United again, although the club have been weighing up a possible return.

Previous reports suggested that should he come back, Greenwood could be forced to do a TV interview and undergo therapy beforehand.

However, before a decision is made, fan groups, sponsors and the women’s team would be consulted.

Greenwood scored 35 times in 129 appearances across all competitions for United before his suspension.
