Manchester United are in advanced talks with Inter Milan over the signing of goalkeeper Andre Onana, talkSPORT understands.
United’s opening bid of around £38m falls short of Inter’s £50m valuation but there is a willingness on both sides to reach an agreement.
Onana, who played under Erik ten Hag at Ajax, is open to moving to Old Trafford.
If the deal goes through it is unlikely David de Gea will return to United after his contract expired last month.
The Spaniard was set to agree to an extension before United performed a U-turn and pulled the plug on the proposal.
With United now down to the bare bones in the goalkeeping department, Ten Hag has identified the 27-year-old as the perfect replacement for De Gea.
The Dutchman has Dean Henderson and Tom Heaton at his disposal but a move to Onana could see Nottingham Forest bid for Henderson, who spent last season on loan at the City Ground.
The United boss has kept a close eye on Onana since their time together at Ajax and the Cameroonian fits the style of goalkeeper he wants to Old Trafford.
His attraction to Onana stems from his suitability of playing out from the back as Ten Hag continues to implement his philosophy at the club.
But United will have to pay close attention to their expenditure this summer following the £60m signing of Mason Mount.
Ten Hag is in desperate need of a new striker but with the club’s takeover talks still unresolved, United will have to spend wisely ahead of the new season.
Onana moved to Inter on a free transfer last summer, signing a contract until 2027.
But his performances – particularly in the Champions League – caught the eye of Manchester United chiefs who have now launched and offensive for the Cameroon star.
