Manchester United will not offer above £60million in their pursuit of Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund.

The 20-year-old is United’s number one target as boss Erik ten Hag aims to bolster his attacking options ahead of the new season.

United were hoping to bring Spurs striker Harry Kane to Old Trafford but were discouraged from tabling a bid.

Football director John Murtough has held discussions with Atalanta over the transfer of Hojlund but the Serie A side are holding out for a higher fee.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Murtough is said to have been disappointed over coverage of the negotiations in the Italian media, who have sensationalised a number of details.

United are desperate for a striker and club chiefs are confident of landing one before the transfer window closes, but admit the fee is a stumbling block.

The club have already invested heavily this summer and the signing of Hojlund would place United in a strong position ahead of next season’s assault on domestic and European competition.

United splashed £60m on Mason Mount and another £42m on goalkeeper Andre Onana therefore the club will have to tread carefully to avoid further Financial Fair Play sanctions.

Hojlund still has four years to run on his existing deal after only joining Atalanta from Austrian side Sturm Graz last year.

The Denmark international has netted an impressive six goals in five games for his country and ten goals in 34 appearances for Atalanta.

Other targets for United to consider are Eintracht Frankfurt marksman Randal Kolo Muani and Ajax forward Mohammed Kudus.

But the Red Devils have not completely closed the door on the idea of Kane moving to Old Trafford despite Bayern Munich currently leading the chase for the England skipper.
