Manchester United are set to have £1million added to their transfer kitty thanks to a clause inserted in Tahith Chong’s contract.
The Dutch forward, who came through the Red Devils academy, was sold to Birmingham last summer after making just 16 first team appearances.
Birmingham forked out £1.45m to sign the 23-year-old, with United earning a 25 per cent sell-on clause of any future transfer.
As a result, Erik ten Hag’s side now stand to pocket a seven-figure fee with Luton closing in on bringing the Netherlands youth international to Kenilworth Road.
According to Sky Sports, Chong is having a medical at Luton ahead of a £4m transfer from St Andrew’s.
The Athletic have reported this would see United earn £1m of the deal.
United are no strangers to inserting sell-on clauses into contracts of academy players.
They stand to make 30 per cent of Ethan Laird’s next switch after they sold the right-back – like Chong – to Birmingham.
Meanwhile they will earn 40 per cent of a future transfer if Zidane Iqbal departs Eredivisie outfit Urtecht after being sold for £850,000 last month.
Birmingham boss John Eustace recently lauded Chong as he spoke of a potential exit for the winger, who chipped in with four goals and five assists in 38 Championship matches last season.
He said of Luton’s interest: “I’d be disappointed to lose him.
“We saw Tahith’s development throughout the season. We spoke about all the players coming in and how it is my job to develop them and move them on.
“In the year that he’s been with us you can see that his performances were getting better and better. He matured as a player. To lose him wouldn’t be ideal, but it’s part of what we do.
“We want to make players better and if we are not successful moving up the league, we want the players to have the opportunity to get into the Premier League.
“If that happens then great, but hopefully we can keep him.”
