Jason Cundy wants to see ex-Chelsea star Mason Mount flop at Manchester United as watching him represent the Red Devils made him sad.

Mount made his unofficial debut for his new club on Wednesday in a friendly against Leeds in Oslo, a match Man United won 2-0.

The club’s newest signing only played the first half as Erik ten Hag made wholesale changes for the second half.

But it was vital experience for Mount, who admitted he is loving finding out about his new teammates.

“We’ve been working very hard [in training], so it’s good to now put it into practice and play on the pitch now,” said the Englishman.

“That first week is mostly focused on getting the legs going again, getting the distance in the legs by running.

“But we’ve definitely been working on a few tactics as well, coming into this game.

“I’ve definitely got a great understanding of how the manager wants to work and how the boys play.

“Obviously now it’s about using these games to work at it more and and putting it into practice when we get on the pitch.

“It was a good start today, a good win. As I said, it’s important to get the minutes in the legs, but it’s important to win as well and that’s what we want to do this season.”

“I really liked that role [deeper midfield] today,” he added. “Being able to drop in and get on the ball and start the play from a bit deeper, but also having that freedom to be able to get forward and get in the box.”

The midfielder has been given the No. 7 shirt in a massive show of faith considering the names that have worn that top in the past.

David Beckham, Bryan Robson and George Best are just some of the high-profile players to have donned the iconic jersey at Old Trafford in the past.

However, if talkSPORT pundit and Chelsea fan Cundy had his way, Mount’s legacy would be more Alexis Sanchez and Memphis Depay over Cristiano Ronaldo and Eric Cantona.

Though he did admit to United fan Andy Goldstein that they have a ‘hell of a player’ on their hands.

The England international has been the first, and to date, only major arrival at United this summer after Ten Hag made his signature a priority.

A contract dispute with Chelsea saw him insist on leaving his boyhood club in a move that has riled Blues fans after joining a Premier League rival.

And that includes Cundy, who has admitted he wants the 24-year-old to flop with his new team.

When asked by Goldstein if he wanted Mount to do well, Cundy told talkSPORT: “I know Mason’s dad very well, Tony and Debbie, I know his parents. It’s a lovely family, he’s a lovely kid.

“Erm, no, I don’t want him to do well.”

Goldstein interjected: “So, you want him to fail?”

Cundy replied: “Yeah, of course I do. That is no bearing on him. Because they are lovely but if Mason Mount does well, Man United do well.

“And I don’t want Man United to do well. So, as far as I am concerned, he can be a flop.

“You have got a top player there. I am telling you now, you are going to love him. He is a fan’s favourite.

“Obviously not Chelsea now because of what has happened. I know how football works, I don’t have animosity toward him as a person.

“Sadly, and I blame both sides, the club and him, as far as he’s concerned, he can flop.”
