Manchester United’s summer signings Mason Mount and Andre Onana endured an undesirable first-half on their Old Trafford debut.
The Red Devils face Lens in their penultimate pre-season fixture before the 2023/24 season gets underway.
The mood was high at Old Trafford following the unveiling of new £72m striker Rasmus Hojlund prior to kick-off.
But two of Man United’s other summer signings didn’t quite get the memo, as they endured a tough start to their first game in front of their home fans.
First, Mount – who signed from Chelsea for £55million earlier in the window – was given a glorious chance to put his side 1-0 up.
Bruno Fernandes sprayed a superb pass out to Alejandro Garnacho on the left wing, who then found Mount in front of an open goal.
However, the midfielder completely scuffed his shot and the ball ended up going backwards and out of danger.
Then, as Mount shook off his missed chance, £47m goalkeeper Onana was then left stunned as Lens’ Florian Sotoca spotted him off his line.
After a misplaced pass from Diogo Dalot in the United back line, the Frenchman pounded on the loose ball and sent it from the halfway line in an attempt to chip the Red Devils star.
Onana, who had been lingering on the edge of his box, tried desperately to track back and bat the effort away.
However, he ended up in the net alongside the ball, bundled at the back of the goal as Lens celebrated their audacious opener.
It is, of course, only pre-season still. However, fans on Twitter were still surprised by the duo’s slip ups.
“Rival fans will make a meal out of cooking Mount and Onana today. Man!” one supporter said.
“Mason Mount scuffing at the sort of sitter that you’re glad it’s only pre season. Best to get that out of your system early,” another wrote.
“Onana doesn’t yet know that our defence can misplace 5 yard passes,” a third fan joked.
