Mykhailo Mudryk is already better than Chelsea teammate Cole Palmer in certain areas.

That is according to Joe Cole.

Mykhailo Mudryk and Cole Palmer were both on the scoresheet during Chelsea’s 3-2 league win over Newcastle United last night, but they’re having quite different seasons at Stamford Bridge.

For Mudryk, he’s now got six goals and three assists in 29 games across all competitions. Unfortunately, the 22-year-old left-winger is struggling for any consistent runs in the starting XI.

As for Palmer, the 21-year-old right-winger’s emerged as the club’s new poster boy following last summer’s arrival from Manchester City. He’s got 13 goals and 11 assists in 33 Chelsea appearances so far.

Joe Cole has paid tribute to Palmer for his impressive impact at Stamford Bridge, but he suggests that fellow attacker Mudryk may be even better in some departments.

Cole told Premier League productions (10:19pm, 11 March): “When Cole Palmer signed for the club there was a lot of eyebrows raised but he is so intelligent. When you watch Mudryk it is like a young player who excites you but with Palmer, he could be 31 not 21. The fans here absolutely love him.

“There is a player in Mudryk somewhere. When you watch him live you can see the scope for him to get better. The stuff Cole Palmer is so good at, Mudryk can do better. He needs to improve but he has such outstanding natural talent.”

From what we’ve seen so far in Chelsea colours, Palmer does have a far higher ceiling than Mudryk.

However, we do like the support Mudryk receives because from the outside looking in it feels like he’s desperate to be a success in west London.

Mudryk may edge Palmer when it comes to one or two physical attributes, mainly speed and strength. It’s the Englishman operating at a different kind of level when it comes to footballing IQ, consistency and end product, though.

Our hope is that both rising stars grow and improve together in the same Blues line-up moving forward.

Speaking via Sky Sports last night, Jamie Carragher admitted he was glad after watching Mudryk score against Newcastle in the league.
