Reports have claimed that Chelsea have just triggered a clause to extend the contract of one player at the club.

This is according to the Evening Standard, who have stated that the clause has been triggered despite the fact there was still plenty of time left on his deal.

The mantra has been clear since Todd Boehly took over at the club, with the club offering long-term contracts to players that are joining them for what is a clear project.

There has of course been a lot of talk over what the Blues do if one of these players gets unhappy with their situation, and reports did come out suggesting this may have happened earlier this season.

They claimed that Enzo Fernandez, previously the most expensive signing in the club’s history, had become discontent with his situation just over a year after joining the club.

‘World-class’ Enzo Fernandez happy at Chelsea

The player himself put an end to this talk with a very deliberate celebration for a goal scored against Aston Villa in the FA Cup, off the back of a performance which reminded everyone just how important he was to the squad.

This is the same competition he was described as ‘world-class’ in earlier this season by opponent Mateo Joseph.

Chelsea extend Enzo Fernandez’s contract

This has perhaps been reflected by the fact that the club have reportedly triggered the option to extend his contract by another year.

The story goes on to say that the same has also occurred for Mykhailo Mudryk, who again still had plenty of time left on his original deal.

It shows there is still a lot of faith at the club that the future is with two of their most expensive signings of the Boehly era.

With the eight-year contract loophole seeming to be patched by those in charge, it remains to be seen which way the club look in their next transfer window, where it looks like money will still be spent.

This is of course barring on the fact they manage to sell a number of first team players in order to balance the books from their earlier spending sprees.
