Former Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino could be in line to replace Gareth Southgate as England boss.

The England job is currently available after Gareth Southgate’s decision to resign following Euro 2024, and Mauricio Pochettino has been linked with it.

England will not overlook Pochettino just because he is a foreign coach, meaning that the Argentine could very well end up in the Wembley dugout.

If not, Pochettino will perhaps wait for a Premier League club to come along, and if a top one does, then it looks like Chelsea could be in for a bit of money.

What happens if Mauricio Pochettino joins one of Chelsea’s rivals?

In terms of national teams, England are not the only possible option for Pochettino. Pochettino could take over the USA team if he is approached about their vacancy.

Pochettino is free to join either country, though things become a bit more complicated if he wants to manage one of Chelsea’s rivals.

According to The Telegraph, the Blues will be owed a £5m compensation fee if Pochettino joins one of the Premier League’s top six teams in the six months from his Stamford Bridge departure.

With the 52-year-old having only left Chelsea back in May, the above is still possible, though it would probably have to take a really bad start to the new season by one of the division’s elite for that to happen.

Which Premier League club is Mauricio Pochettino most likely to join?

Looking at the top teams, Chelsea are obviously not an option after just departing from west London.

Manchester City and Arsenal are also unlikely to sack their managers any time soon, with Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta doing well at their respective clubs.

Liverpool have just hired Arne Slot as well, so they will want to give him time. Ultimately, then, succeeding Erik ten Hag at Manchester United or returning to Tottenham Hotspur are the more likely outcomes.

It was claimed that Pochettino wanted the Manchester United job after leaving Chelsea at the end of last season.
