Chelsea failed to qualify for the Champions League last season.
Under former manager Mauricio Pochettino, who has now been replaced by Enzo Maresca, they finished sixth place in the Premier League.
However, there is a chance of one current member of Chelsea‘s first-team squad playing in Europe’s elite competition next term.
He is currently being linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge, and it is now being claimed that he wants to join a Champions League side if Chelsea decide to force him out of the club.
Champions League club could end up signing Chelsea star
Right now, there is speculation about several players leaving west London this summer.
For example, Levi Colwill has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich, while Conor Gallagher is believed to be attracting interest from Tottenham Hotspur.
They could be dealt a blow in any potential pursuit of the midfielder, though.
That is because a report from GiveMeSport claims that Gallagher wants to join a Champions League club if Chelsea force him out of Stamford Bridge in the upcoming transfer window.
Aston Villa are rumoured to be very keen on the 24-year-old, who Pochettino once labelled “priceless”, so the above could happen.
Is Conor Gallagher good enough to play for a Champions League club?
It depends what Champions League club you are talking about. The Englishman is not going to be a starter at Real Madrid with all of the talent that they have, for example.
However, Villa, who already play in the Premier League, are definitely Gallagher’s level.
He would get into their team, especially with Douglas Luiz possibly leaving Villa Park this summer. According to Fabrizio Romano, Juventus are trying to sign the Brazilian.
Gallagher was one of the hardest-working players in the Premier League last season.
The 85 tackles he made in the top flight put him in the top 15 footballers for that area (FBref).
You need more than that to be successful in the Champions League; it is a level where players need technical quality as well. But Gallagher could easily play in this Villa side and they are now technically a Champions League club.
