Chelsea are on course to set what would be a Premier League record for them, and it is not a good one.

Going into their game against Newcastle United tonight, Chelsea have conceded 43 goals in the English top flight.

According to The Athletic, after playing 26 matches, that puts them on course to finish the campaign with 63 goals conceded. It would be the most amount of goals they have shipped in in the Premier League era.

The above really shows how poor Mauricio Pochettino and his side have been this season.

The Argentine is now under immense pressure, with it being reported that there is a possibility of Chelsea getting rid of him before the campaign ends and bringing in an interim manager.

Chelsea’s leaky defence disappointing

Chelsea have a lot of quality defenders, including Thiago Silva, Levi Colwill and Axel Disasi.

Considering that, it is disappointing that they have conceded so many goals this season. Of course, the Blues have had a lot of injuries at the back, while Pochettino has not always used players in their natural positions. These things have not helped Chelsea.

You can question, then, if Pochettino’s set-up is actually working. Well, when you look at his options in defence and where the Blues are in the table, the answer is quite clearly no.

The 52-year-old has some good defenders and a good team overall. It is now time for him to find a way to get more out of what he has at his disposal. If not, then Pochettino is not going to last at Stamford Bridge much longer.

In general, though, it is quite clear that the team can do much better. The defenders cannot be solely blamed for a side with so much talent being in the bottom half of the Premier League table in March.
