Chelsea legend Joe Cole has been discussing his former club’s struggles this season.

During his time at Chelsea and after that, the Blues were one of the top teams in the country.

However, since being taken over by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, they have been anything but that.

Under their ownership, Chelsea finished 12th in the Premier League last season and are on course to finish around there again this term if they do not end the campaign strongly.

Right now, Mauricio Pochettino‘s men are ninth in the table.

Joe Cole on the big mistake Todd Boehly has made at Chelsea

Chelsea supporters cannot say Boehly and Clearlake have not invested money into the club.

They have spent so much money on transfers, breaking the Blues’ transfer record twice after bringing in Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez. The South American duo are now the two most expensive signings in Chelsea’s history.

However, the recruitment under Chelsea’s new owners has seen only young players being targeted, and Cole thinks that is where Boehly and Co have gone wrong.

“The big mistake the club have made, they have gone down the route of getting young players, trying to develop them and letting them grow as assets and then also kind of build the team back to the top,” the Blues legend said on talkSPORT (22/04/2024 at 11:07). “I don’t think you can do that.

“I think you need senior players around the young players to help them develop and learn. I think that’s where the problem is this year.”

Chelsea’s squad could become even younger next season

Turning 40 this year, Thiago Silva is the oldest and most experienced player at Stamford Bridge.

However, his contract expires in the summer and he is now set to leave the club.

According to Fabrizio Romano, a decision on the Brazilian’s future has now been made as his time at Chelsea draws to a close.

His departure would see this Chelsea team become an even more inexperienced one, which is a bit worrying.
