Don Hutchison claims that one Chelsea player proved just how intelligent he is on the football pitch after what he did in the crucial win against Brighton.

Chelsea moved up to sixth in the Premier League table on Wednesday night after securing a 2-1 away victory at Brighton.

The Blues now know they need just a point on the final day at home to Bournemouth to ensure they’re playing European football next season. Whether that’s in the Europa League or the Europa Conference League will be determined by results elsewhere.

Cole Palmer and Christopher Nkunku scored for Chelsea in midweek to earn the vital three points. Unfortunately a sour note from the match is that Reece James was sent off for kicking out at Joao Pedro on the floor.

Don Hutchison amazed by Chelsea player vs Brighton

Don Hutchison, the Premier League pundit, was waxing lyrical about Chelsea’s Nkunku after his goal against Brighton.

The 26-year-old attacker came off the bench and scored what turned out to be the winning goal. He timed his run in the box superbly and pulled back to receive Malo Gusto’s pass before calmly finishing.

“Watch his movement, Nkunku. Everyone else goes in towards goal – he’s got the intelligence to pull out and then stand still to meet the very good cut-back by Gusto,” Hutchison said via the Premier League’s official website (9:15pm, 15 May).

Christopher Nkunku shows what Blues have been missing

The intelligence from Nkunku to find space in the box versus Brighton and finish is what’s been missing from Chelsea’s attack at times this year.

It was only the 13th appearance of a frustrating debut campaign for Nkunku in England. His third goal for the Blues versus Brighton was a reminder of the player the club invested in when they signed him from RB Leipzig.

If Nkunku is fit at the start of next season, Chelsea’s forward line suddenly looks even more threatening if you have him contributing alongside Palmer.
