Chelsea’s new manager could be without Enzo Fernandez for his first pre-season at the club.

The Blues are looking to appoint a new man for the dugout after Mauricio Pochettino‘s departure from west London.

On Tuesday, it was confirmed by Chelsea that the Argentine had left the club by mutual consent.

He could now be replaced by Leicester City’s Enzo Maresca, who is reportedly Chelsea’s top target to replace Pochettino.

Whether it is Maresca or someone else, the next Blues boss could be without Fernandez until August.

Why Chelsea’s new manager may not have Enzo Fernandez available

Fernandez is a key player in this Chelsea squad and the second-most expensive signing in the club’s history.

However, Pochettino’s successor may not have that available until the start of the new Premier League season.

According to journalist Cesar Luis Merlo, Fernandez has spoken to Chelsea and they have given him permission to take part in this summer’s Olympic Games if he is called up by Argentina.

It could be a very long summer, then, for the 23-year-old, who is also set to take part in the Copa America. The football at the Olympics concludes on 10 August.

Enzo Fernandez could thrive at Chelsea following Mauricio Pochettino’s exit

Regarding club matters, Fernandez could actually end up being someone who benefits from Pochettino’s exit.

It did not always look like the former Chelsea boss knew what to do with his compatriot, even playing him as a No.10 at times.

According to The Athletic, Pochettino had concerns about Fernandez playing as a No.6 and No.8.

As a natural midfielder, it is quite concerning to hear the above is what Pochettino thought and shows that he was probably always going to find it difficult to succeed at Chelsea. Given how much the club invested in Fernandez, there would have been an expectation for the 52-year-old to get the best out of him, which he quite clearly didn’t.

Getting the former Benfica man and Moises Caicedo to perform as a duo will no doubt be something Chelsea’s next manager is instructed to do.
