Leeds will be hoping for a comeback story similar to Rickie Fowler’s next season.

American golfer Fowler has brushed off years in the wilderness to lead the season’s third major at the Los Angeles Country Club after round two.

Having been tipped as the sport’s next big thing, Fowler slumped to no. 185 in the world and raised doubts over a future at the elite level.

It is a similar story to Leeds, who ended a 16-year absence from the Premier League to return in 2021.

The Whites have since fallen back into obscurity with relegation to the Championship – but they remain one of the country’s biggest clubs.

Likewise, Fowler’s status as one of the world’s most popular golfers has never changed, and his struggles have only made him more likeable.

With familiar narratives, it is rather fitting that Fowler and Leeds could be teaming up in the near future.

Speaking before the US Open, Fowler revealed he is looking to invest in the Yorkshire club as part of the takeover by 49ers Enterprises.

The 34-year-old will be joined by close friends and fellow golfers Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas in the business venture.

“There’s the group that’s moving forward so potentially we’ll be a part of it,” Fowler told Sky Sports News.

“It’s cool to have these opportunities. It would be fun if we get to be a part of it, if not we’ll continue to root for Leeds.

“Obviously they got relegated but to get to go to a Premier League game, a Champions League game, any of that [would be great]. It’s a massive sport and I feel like it is continuing to get bigger in the States.

“Since I haven’t been to a game, I don’t have the true appreciation until [I get to] be there and feel that energy.”

While Yorkshireman Matt Fitzpatrick won the 2022 US Open with Leeds fan Billy Foster on the bag, the Elland Road faithful could boast another winner in Beverly Hills this week.
