Shaka Hislop has been comparing Chelsea and Real Madrid following the former’s appointment of Enzo Maresca as manager.

Chelsea confirmed the arrival of Enzo Maresca on Monday, with the 44-year-old leaving Leicester City to join them.

He replaces Mauricio Pochettino, who lasted just one season at the club after deciding to part ways with his now former employers last month.

Maresca was also in charge of his former club for just one year, so he has little experience managing in England.

It makes his appointment a gamble, especially for Hislop.

Shaka Hislop on Chelsea, Enzo Maresca and Real Madrid

For Hislop, Chelsea and Real Madrid have something in common despite one club being the European champions and the other not even being a Champions League side.

The former goalkeeper feels that both European giants have very young squads, but Real Madrid obviously have an experienced manager in Carlo Ancelotti and that is what Chelsea needed instead of Maresca.

Discussing Maresca’s appointment on ESPN, Hislop said: “If you have a young team as Chelsea do, you need an experienced manager. If you have a young team like Real Madrid do, a young [and] very talented team, you have an experienced manager.

“So to bring in an inexperienced manager in a team as young as Chelsea are without their experience, when things start to go wrong and they’re looking to the sidelines for somebody to get them back on track, you don’t trust the inexperience of Maresca.”

Should Chelsea have hired a more experienced manager than Enzo Maresca?

There are some good names on the market right now, including former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel and Roberto De Zerbi.

They would have been safer bets than Maresca. However, Tuchel was always unlikely after being fired by the club two years ago.

With the German and De Zerbi having both managed in the Premier League before, though, it may have been wiser to go with one of the two or someone else.

But what’s done is done now and Chelsea fans will be hoping that Maresca can prove all of his doubters wrong. At present, there are, understandably, a lot of them.
